Essay on The Great Gatsby
Essay on The Great Gatsby Essay on The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald In F. Scott Fitzgerald's 'The Great Gatsby' he proves the American dream to be nothing people pretending to be something they're not in hopes of a better life. So is the American dream still a living dream today? Well you would think it would be because you still hear some people still talk about it here and there, so that's what I hoped to find out. Here are some things I discovered in the process. It seems the American dream is very popular in American Literature. While it is quite popular in others 'The Great Gatsby' is the most widely known book for the American dream. One of the greatest examples in the book of the American dream is Jay Gatsby. Even though this is true, all the characters in the book (except for one) believe it totally and completely revolves around wealth. Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s unique expression of the American dream lacks the sense of fulfillment that you would believe to be associated with the American dream. The main reason people wanted a part of the American dream was the idea of wealth. There were, however, other reasons. One reason was so they could be better off than they were before. Gatsby had dreamed of a better life since he was a kid. So in order for him to try to achieve his dream, he decided to change his name from Jay Gatz to Gatsby. The American dream was the dream of many people in the 20s and 30s but very few managed to achieve it. In the book, Gatsbyââ¬â¢s dream was symbolized by the woman he loved but couldnââ¬â¢t have, Daisy. To him Daisy was wealth and she was the dream he wants to achieve. Throughout the book he tries hard to get her because she is the reason he acts the way he does. At the time he was trying to recreate his past and correct it while doing so. That is why he decided to change his name to Gatsby, because his parents were poor farmers and he wanted a life where people didnââ¬â¢t judge him based on his family. While trying to correct his past, he began getting into illegal stuff. Gatsby was in the drug and oil business and he claims he did what he did to achieve his dream. After he gets out of trouble, he becomes very upset because he thought Daisy would wait for him. If she truly loved Gatsby then she would have waited, but she never really loved him. The only thing she loved was wealth, so instead of waiting she married Tom because he had the wealth she was looking for. We learn that Daisy is very materialistic and a bit of a flake. Seeing how Gatsby doesnââ¬â¢t understand the traditions of East Egg City, he thinks he can win Daisy over with nice shirts. Trying to do this only makes things more difficult because he is unsuccessful. Daisy is selfish, careless, and really didnââ¬â¢t care about anyone elseââ¬â¢s happiness but hers. This carelessness is what eventually caused her to kill Myrtle and not keep t hidden from anyone. It is possible that Daisy killed Myrtle because of what Myrtle believed about Tom. In the book, Myrtle believed that Tom was her one chance at the American dream and she would do whatever it took to achieve her dream. T omââ¬â¢s interpretation of the American dream is tied in with wealth and money like the other characters. Tom wanted everything an ââ¬Å"importantâ⬠person would have, and this is what inspired his American dream. Ferrysmawan says this about Daisy in his review of the book. ââ¬Å"This shows how Daisy thinks about life and how happiness can be bought by not being aware and presumably by having money and being fooled with it. The results of her dream and the methods she used to accomplish her dream led to the unhappiness of her marriage. When she again tried to capture happiness whilst keeping her dream in front of her, it ended in the tragedy that the Great Gatsby depicts.â⬠ââ¬ËQ

Summary Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 6
Summary - Assignment Example In every organization, communication should be tailored to serve these four functions effectively. As highlighted, failure of communication to effectively carry out these functions only means that an organization needs to have more focus on developing its communication channels. The chapter also discussed the differences between the formal and the informal communication, highlighting the communication process. The communication process begins from the message to be sent, the encoding process, the choice of the appropriate channel, reception of the message and its decoding by the receiver (Robbins 370). The chapter highlighted how information flows from one level to another in different organizations. In some organizations, downward communication exists which involves the flow of information from the higher levels to the lower ones (373). Usually, information that is passed down the levels concerns the assigning of goals, policies, procedures and instructions from the top to the lower level. Moreover, feedback from higher office is passed down to the employees. In other organizations, upward communication exists which entails the flow of information from employees and other lower levels to the top management. In this case, the lower level staffs usually communicate in a specific manner that will attract the attention of the top management. This kind of communication is effective when employees are seeking to express their grievances or are giving feedback concerning their tasks. The third flow of communication may occur in a literal manner. Lateral communication involves people of the same level who may either be employees or managers. It is critical for the appropriate small group network of communication to be chosen depending on the criteria given priority in an organization. These networks may be chain, wheel or the all channel

Wisdom Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Wisdom Paper - Essay Example I consider my grandmother wise because she conforms to the definition of wisdom that I believe in and have discussed above. She has spent a whole lifetime during which she has seen a lot of highs and lows. She has been through a lot of enlightening and tough experiences and challenges, all of which have added to her knowledge of the best ways to deal with them, and so she has become more learned and wiser as she has aged. Perhaps it can be said for all elderly people, but some people do not learn from their mistakes, so they cannot be considered wise even if they are old. I am sure my grandmother is not included in that category. While I have had a lot of opportunities to learn from my grandmother, I have not been quite as lucky to learn from Martin Luther King Jr. as he had died several years before I had born. However, having read his biographies, and the books and articles written about him, I have learnt a lot of qualities and philosophies of Martin Luther King Jr. that were described in them. Obviously, learning from a living person is a much different and better experience than learning from the second-hand accounts about a person who has passed away. Since my childhood, spending at least half an hour a day solely with my grandmother whenever she is at my home has been my habit. Whenever we are together, I ask her questions about her life, and her experiences, and tend to understand her thoughts, philosophies, and opinions about all kinds of issues. These experiences have been extremely informative, spiritually rejuvenating, and enlightening for me. I think that wisdom and learning are interrelated terms in that wisdom is enhanced by learning, but the two terms cannot be used interchangeably since they differ in their meanings. Wisdom is in-born. It is the sense to distinguish between the right and the wrong. Learning, on the other hand, is knowledge that is

The Characteristics Of Octavian History Essay
The Characteristics Of Octavian History Essay Augustus, during the time of his reign as princeps of the Roman people, cultivated for himself an image of military prowess, generosity, virtue, and clemency. Octavian, before known as Augustus was thought to be one of the most important leaders in Roman history. His character as a leader, gangster and statesman was brought up through tough competition .Also being the adopted son of Julius Caesar, has brought up more character in him than before as he had to live up to people exception as next Caesar . Even historians today, when compared to his adoptive father Julius Caesar, Augustus, did more for the country than did him. The characteristics of Octavian (later known as Augustus) quickly grew as more prominent political figure, just after the death of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. Octavian, although only 18 at the time, had little in the way of merit to go off of other than his relation to Caesar. He relied heavily on this connection which can be seen through various methods of propaganda which were heavily promoted at the time. One of the chief methods propaganda used in ancient Rome both during and outside of this time period was through the public. This was done by introducing coins, games and also by improving standard of living which was done by construction of public building and monuments in his name. He created the denarii, a silver coin that made trade between different parts of the empire much easier. Trade also became faster when Augustus eliminated all taxed goods which merged the Roman lands into one large economy. He also created faster transportation between cities by roads. The last important contribution was setting up the civil service. These services were open to anybody of all ranks in the army and were made to work for a job as a slave. This institution took care of Romes grain supply, road repairs, the postal system, and all the other daily work of running the empire. Under Augustus great accomplishments and advancements which were made over the years has led Roman Empire to flourish. Yet in researching Augustus, one must pose the question, was he truly a great leader whose true aim to love Rome and its people at the heart of his decisions or was it masterfully manipulating and achieving what he wanted? Or could it be possibly accomplish both? In many ways, Augustus has left a deeper imprint on the world than Julius Caesar ever did. Despite having an imperialistic approach, he understood the concept of institutions and democracy and drove them forward. Yet the man, Caesar Augustus, remains a figure of shadows that gets lost behind the details of his achievements and propaganda of the time. Over the course of his career Augustus did much to manipulate his image in order to serve the needs of his country. He managed to sufficiently and relatively quickly gain power and restore peace to Rome. His image continued to morph and change throughout his life going through the extremes of relatively unknown, to ruthless vengeance-bringer, to the pious, just leader of a restored republic. Another aspect is the way in which Octavian (later known as Augustus) was use of the army which led to important formations and maintenance of power. Octavian primary aim was to avenge traitor who killed Julius Caesar. He first gained the support of the senate by creating an enmity between him and Antony. This helped Octavian over time which helped him to become more popular .The popularity helped him to take revenge on Cicero and Brutus. Thus, Octavian formed an alliance with Marcus Antonius and Marcus Lepidus leading to the second triumvirate. The first actions by the members were to kill the great speaker and writer Cicero along with other senators and traitors. The next move was to avenge the murders of Julius Caesar mainly Brutus and Cassius. They defeated and killed Brutus and Cassius at the battle of Philippi in Macedonia in 42 B.C. The Second Triumvirate were now dominant in the republic, but this did not last very long. Next person who fell into Octavians list was Marcus Lep idus and Antony. Marcus Lepidus tried to overthrow Octavian, but failed and was stripped of his title. Octavian confined Lepidus to house arrest and Lepidus later died. This event has left Antony and Octavian to divide the whole empire which was under the control of the senate. Octavian assumed control of the Roman forces in the West and Antony controlled the Roman forces in the East. Inevitably, the battle for control of the whole empire between Octavian and Marcus Antonius was ensured. This battle would have become the largest civil war Rome had ever seen. Marcus Antonius was supported by the pharaoh of Egypt, Cleopatra as they prepared to land their forces and navy at the battle of Actium on September 2, 31 BC in an attempt to overthrow Octavian. The naval forces of Octavian, commanded by the General Agrippa, came to be victorious. The Battle of Actium is thought of as one of the most decisive battles ever fought because it established Octavians position as master of the entire G reco-Roman world .Octavian now had the funds from the conquest of Egypt to pay his army and he also had increased the size of his own army due to the defection of Antonius; army to his side. Octavian was now the sole commander of Rome and returned to Rome in victory.à The creation of a new image was a crucial step to change Octavian to Augustus, who had committed some violent acts as a Triumvir and held power illegally. At the heart of this position in the state was laying the army. It had been a major player in the chaotic events of the Late Republic and it had carried Augustus to power. Concern for its proper maintenance and for the effective channelling of its loyalties was therefore one of the chief goals of the Augustan settlement. In achieving these goals, Augustuss actions were a rousing success, since the army was tamed as a force in imperial politics for the better part of a century. This proved that Augustus was triumvir and his participation in the butchery, has led many to think that this man would seemingly stop at nothing to achieve lasting political primacy. But, we have the seemingly seen that this man had become benevolent monarch which was seen as latter part of his reign, as he was hailed as pater patriae (father of the fatherland) in 2 BCE. We have the man from a very provincial Italian background who rose to control Rome, who passed a range of conservative laws on marriage and the procreation of the governing classes, yet who was also the man whom, as Suetonius reports Not even his friends could deny that he often committed adulteryà [1]à . These dichotomies pivot around the 27 BCE. Octavian the evil triumvir was replaced by Augustus, the benevolent leader of the (restored) Republic who ruled with universal consent His rule was pre-destined and was viewed favourably by the Gods. He had a divine ancestry and all Roman history had been leading up to the new Golden Age of peace, prosperity, piety, morality and justice which he ushered in. The image of Augustus changed significantly throughout his life. He started off as little more than the son of Caesar and he came to earn the respect and faith of his nation. He manipulated his image over the course of his life in order to be that which the people needed in order to believe in the future of Rome and a time or peace instead of civil war. He avoided the arrogant flaws of his father in favour of maintain the friendship of the senate but ended up just as powerful as the dictator. As a long-term ruler, he established a new system of government that managed the image of his rule as part of strategy for success. Augustus must have been one of the single most successful manipulators of his own image as he stands as comparison to the spin-doctors of the modern political scene. He was a conservative father figure, shepherding the nation into a new golden age and a propagandist. Most of his rule was based on by creating, by design, and by trial and error which created a new system of government and as well as a new governing regime. Even though his power through Brutal force, yet one would claim his rule came with a universal consent.

Personal Narrative - The Day My Mother Went to the Hospital :: Personal Narrative essay about myself
The Day My Mother Went to the Hospital During second period math class, the PA comes on. I hear "David Higgins to the office for an early dismissal, Please". Being as I was only in the second grade, I rushed to the office, only to see my God Mother waiting for me. She tells me that we have to go pick up my other two brothers at pre-school. I asked her why, but, she only responded with "I'll explain later". So I followed her to the car and hopped in. We rushed to Mitzpah, where the pre-school my brothers were in was. We picked up my two younger brothers and rushed to my God Mothers home in Millville. My God Mother then explained that my father would not be home for a while, being as he was rushing to Cooper Hospital to see my mother. At this point in time, being of such a young age, I started to block out a lot of what she was telling us all. I only remember a little bit of that period of time because of my memory block. When my father had come home from the hospital, he told us all that our mother had been envlolved in a serious car accident, and that she wouldn't be home for a few weeks. I don't remember very much after that, except for the fact that the period of time my mother was in the hospital fell on her birthday. So, all of the family, except me, sat down next to the stereo. My father plugged in a microphone, popped in a blank cassestte and hit record. Each one of the children started to sing "Happy Birthday", then ended with a personal message. My father then recorded his message. I was in so much shock and horror that I didn't want to record anything. I was under the belief that my mother wasn't coming home at all. My family kept trying to get me to record something, but, I refused. After about a week or two of my mother being in the hospital, the whole family got in the car, and went to visit her. Being as it was a very large hospital,

You Can Have It
Philip Levine writes as though he is from a hard working middle class family geared toward the more highly educated class. Levine directs his poetry towards the higher class, through personal relationships and by showing pride and respectability in manual labor. Levine wants the more educated to know that even though the lower class may not have the most respectable jobs, they still take pride in their work because it supports their family. By using personal relationships, Levine emphasizes the how much pride the working class takes in their jobs. Levine writes as though he is from a hard working middle class family, who works day after day just to make it through life and support the family. Although he is writing from this prospective, his work is actually geared more toward a more highly educated group. Levine wants the higher class to know just how lucky they are. Most people of high stature have never really had a hard manual-laboring job. Its true that most people of this class do not know what hard work is or how it feels to have to struggle to find a job and care for themselves and a family. In the poem, What Work Is, Levine writes, ââ¬Å"if you're/ old enough to read this you know what/ work is, although you may not do it. / Forget you. â⬠In these lines, Levine is saying that the more educated group may know the definition of the word work but the have never really experienced it. This is even further shown in the last line when the man says, ââ¬Å"you don't know what work is. â⬠The man in the poem You Can Have It, is relating to us college students and remembering for himself what it was like to be twenty. We were twenty/ for such a short time and always in/ the wrong clothes, crusted with dirt/ and sweat. I think now we were never twenty. â⬠Twenty year-olds are living the life that this man never had but wishes that he could have had it. He wants the higher class to realize what other people go through and just how easy life really is. In the last line, he says ââ¬Å"You can have it. â⬠Here he wishes to give back everything from the past thirty years just to be twenty one more time, not work and just have his youth back. In all of Levine's poems, the narrator is proud of his work no matter what job he has. In Starlight, a four year-old boy is watching his father relax on the porch and smoke a cigarette after a long rigorous day of work. The father after seeing the child and the beautiful things that he works for, he can proudly answer that he is happy with a head nod, ââ¬Å"Yes! oh yes! oh yes! â⬠He is proud to work hard to support his family. Every child looks up to its parents. In the beginning of this poem the son seems to be timid about bothering his father while he is relaxing but by the end, the son feels right at his fathers level ââ¬Å"among the stars. He is proud to have his father and know that he is an honest hard working man and looks up to him as if he were a the brightest of all stars. The poem You Can Have It also describes the pride that another man takes in his job even if it is only in a factory. In the third stanza of the poem Levine talks about a man and his brother saying that ââ¬Å"they are only one man/ sharing a heart that always labors, hands/ yellowed and cracked. â⬠Their heart is in their work, even if it is not the most respectable job. Although they talk about the hands being yellowed and cracked, I think it is in a good way. They are proud to have these marks of their hard work to support themselves. This is what they have to do to make it through life and they are proud to do it. In many of his poems, Levine uses many personal relationships to highlight the themes in each poem. In Levine's poem, What Work Is, the man is waiting in line trying to get a job. He is very upset refusing to give in but ââ¬Å"waiting, / to the knowledge that somewhere ahead/ a man is waiting who will say, ââ¬Å"No, / we're not hiring today. He has been in this place before and although he is annoyed at the fact that he cannot get a job, he is also proud to be standing there waiting to get a job. He would be proud to have a job working in a factory or anywhere. Whereas this man would be proud to have a job in a factory, his brother is working at the Cadillac factory but is trying to gain a higher status and have what he would consider a respectable job. The brother is not proud to be working in a factory and is therefore studying German to be an opera singer, in which he would be highly regarded. Levine brings out the father and son relationship in Starlight to show a sense of not only pride in his work but also happiness and an escape from the daily struggles that the father faces. After a long day of hard work, the father finds an escape in returning to his family and being away from his job. Just holding his son up there with him for that one minute gives him a sense of happiness and helps him to forget all the troubles of that day. Seeing his son happy and admiring him so much makes the father feel a sense of worth and pride in his job. Philip Levine writes as though he is from a hard working middle class family who works very hard just to make it through life and support the family. He wants the higher class to know how lucky they are and what struggles the less educated go through. In all of the poems, the narrator is proud of his work no matter what job he has, even if it is only in a factory. By using personal relationships throughout his poems, Levine highlights the fact that all the people take pride in their work.

What were the causes of the Russian Revolution in March 1917 essays
What were the causes of the Russian Revolution in March 1917 essays In March 1917 Russia was an autocracy, a political system favouring unlimited authority by a single individual. It was the crucial events that took place during this period of history that would change many peoples lives. It was the uniting of the peasants, workers, and middle class with the Tsars own army and the many other long-term reasons such as the lack of real change after 1905 revolutions. It was inevitable that Russia was to go the way it did. There are many short and long term reasons for the revolution in March 1917, which we will examine. One of the long-term causes of the revolution in 1917 was that there were poor conditions for the workers in the towns because the peasants who worked in the factories mainly came in the winter. This was because it was the time of the year when it was hard for them to make money out of their land. This meant there was no permanent housing made for them and they mainly slept in the street. Foreigners started most of the industry this was because the Tsar sent letters to people in Britain asking them to invest money in the factories, and this is exactly what they did. The foreigners treated the workers with no respect giving poor wages, no housing, and the government allowed this because they didnt want to upset them with reforms. This created an overall bad hygiene and sanitary in the streets. The peasants, who made up 75% of the population, had no chance of land ownership. A law had been passed that they couldnt buy land and so therefore had to form communes which made the peasants have no incentive as they would have to share the profits and many were apathetic because they didnt see the point in getting up early to work on the land when others did nothing. The conditions were also harsh, there was the grain tax, and abuse of alcohol because the farmers made their own alcohol from the potatoes that they most commonly grew on their land and so it became a...

How to Write a High-Quality Marketing Term Paper a Complete Guide
How to Write a High-Quality Marketing Term Paper a Complete Guide A term paper is a written assignment you have to complete over a period of one term ââ¬â it serves as a representation of your academic achievement over this time and accounts for a significant portion of your grade. In other words, it is certainly a kind of academic work you should learn how to do if you want to successfully graduate. The size of a term paper may vary depending on the task and the topic. Normally, a 10-page paper is considered appropriate, but there are no strict limitations (unless they are clearly imposed by the college). If you can write 15 pages, good for you ââ¬â as long as these 15 pages are full of content and not filler. Likewise, if you are dealing with a narrow topic and manage to tell everything you wanted to tell in 5 pages, donââ¬â¢t try to bloat it up to a certain word count ââ¬â conciseness is always preferable to wordiness, even if it makes your paper look rather short. Marketing papers are somewhat different from the rest because they are more concerned with the practical side of things and more often deal with case studies, examples from real marketing campaigns, analysis of existing marketing practices and their application in different situations and so on. How to Choose a Topic for Your Marketing Term Paper As you are going to spend an entire term writing this paper, it pays to be prepared and put some thought into what topic you choose. Even if the topic is simply assigned to you by your tutor, it may be a good idea to do a bit of reading on it and, if you find a way to alter it to your advantage, discuss this possibility with your supervisor. Donââ¬â¢t approach the choice of a topic lightly ââ¬â it is better to spend some time reading up on it than to suddenly realize half a term later that you donââ¬â¢t have enough material to work on. Here are some general principles that will help you choose a better topic: Read the syllabus. Supervisors always prepare detailed guidelines for word count, format, topic selection and other aspects of term paper writing ââ¬â or at least they should. If you find that some instructions are missing, ask. 9 times out of 10 missing instructions are an oversight rather than an attempt to make you figure something out by yourself. Donââ¬â¢t take things for granted ââ¬â if youââ¬â¢ve done a term paper before, read the syllabus just as attentively as the first time around. Requirements differ dramatically from class to class and from term to term; Make sure the topic is relevant. It is especially important in case of marketing, because what is considered best practices changes quickly, and a topic or idea may lose its relevance over the course of a few months. However, it doesnââ¬â¢t mean that old case studies wonââ¬â¢t do ââ¬â some of the older promotion campaigns can still give us valuable lessons; Marketing stories surround us at all sides, and promising topics can be found everywhere ââ¬â you just have to make an effort to look. Newspaper articles and news websites, online marketing resources (Inc. and Forbes often publish high-quality relevant content), your syllabus, relevant journals and magazines ââ¬â spend some time to skim through recent texts. If all else fails, ask your supervisor for help ââ¬â you may end up with a less interesting topic this way, but there will certainly be enough sources for it; Generalize or narrow down your topic. Many good term paper ideas are wasted either because students try to encompass too broad topics and end up telling a little about a lot, or because they try to concentrate on too narrow topics and end up not having enough to say. A good rule of a thumb is to say what you must in your first draft and then either trim the fat or generalize to similar or related subjects. Here are some examples of what may constitute a good marketing term paper topic: The Importance of Brand Positioning Exemplified by Nikeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Just Do Itâ⬠Campaign; Cartoon Network 2007 Guerilla Marketing Campaign and the Importance of Due Diligence; The Use of Corporate Social Responsibility to Improve Companyââ¬â¢s Equity; Target Corporationââ¬â¢s Statistical Marketing Strategy: Efficiency vs. Ethical Concerns; Incorporation of Standardization by Global Marketing. Pre-Writing Tips Some students rush to start writing immediately after they select a topic, believing that the faster they get something done, the faster they will complete the paper. This is a misconception most of the time you spend working on a marketing term paper should be spent gathering sources and doing research. Writing signifies the end of your work rather than its beginning ââ¬â you should make notes as you read the sources and interview people, but you should already have a definite picture of the entire paper before you start your first draft. Otherwise, you will most likely have to make extensive corrections many times over. Gathering Sources No academic work exists in isolation, and it is true for marketing as well. You cannot simply take a case study, analyze it and write down your conclusions. Even if your analysis is impeccable and conclusions are innovative, without the support from existing body of literature your paper wonââ¬â¢t be accepted by the academic community. So how should you approach hunting for sources? Use both primary (first-hand knowledge, documents, statistics, interviews, experiments, books, articles etc.) and secondary sources (other researchersââ¬â¢ interpretations and explanations of primary sources). You should understand that not all sources are equal ââ¬â primary ones are more valuable, and you should use them whenever possible, resorting to secondary ones only where it is necessary. When youââ¬â¢ve finished gathering the sources, go over them and see if there are too many secondary ones ââ¬â if they are too numerous you may want to remove a few or add a few primary sources so that it doesnââ¬â¢t look as if you rely on non-original sources too much; As a rule of a thumb, you should have 1 to 3 sources per page. So, for a 10-page paper you should have at least 10 sources, but closer to 20 for good measure. The more the better, just make sure your paper doesnââ¬â¢t turn into a list of quotations; Diversify your sources. Use a variety of resource types: articles from serious academic publications, mass media, Internet resources, case studies, statistical research, books, essays; Ask for your professorââ¬â¢s help. He has been dealing with this topic for years and knows literature that is worth reading; Look in online indexing and abstract databases like Business Source Complete, Emerald Insight or Factiva. They contain information on an enormous amount of top-notch business and marketing content ââ¬â just by browsing the titles and abstracts of papers you will be able to understand if this or that topic has a lot of material to explore. Some of these databases require subscriptions but also offer free trial access, so make use of it. Besides, most universities and colleges provide subscriptions to a number of academic databases to their students ââ¬â find out which ones you can use and donââ¬â¢t hesitate to do so. Market Research In marketing, it is not enough to quote other peopleââ¬â¢s work. You have to go out and do your own market research. The most common way to do so is to carry out a market survey ââ¬â i.e., collect information from a sample group of consumers that may be selected either at random or following certain prerequisites. These surveys may be product-, customer- and company-oriented, each concentrating on different aspects of research. Sometimes it may be worth posing a survey as one type but in fact carry out another ââ¬â this can help you achieve interesting results unobtainable in any other way. Marketing Term Paper Writing Tips from Our Experts Just like any other academic assignment, a marketing term paper has a relatively fixed structure. It can vary from college to college, but usually you will have to deal with the same set of sections: Outline; Introduction; Thesis statement; Body paragraphs (sometimes further subdivided into explanatory and analysis/argument paragraphs); Conclusion. Letââ¬â¢s elaborate on them. Outline Outline is a detailed plan of your paper. Here you specify what you should write in each part of the paper. Pay special attention to introduction and thesis statement ââ¬â they are short but extremely important as a part of a bigger picture. Body paragraphs can do with simple enumeration of main points to mention lest you forget them and logical connections between paragraphs. Some students omit writing the outline, but it is a mistake ââ¬â if you have it, you wonââ¬â¢t forget a single point and will be able to immediately see if some parts of the paper seem illogical or disconnected. Introduction Marketing is not different from any other academic discipline in this respect ââ¬â an introduction should catch the readerââ¬â¢s attention and lead him up to your thesis statement. However, you shouldnââ¬â¢t forget that a term paper is a piece of scientific work first and foremost, which means that funny, whimsical and/or quirky introductions are out of the question. However, using a line like ââ¬Å"My term paper is about the importance of logos in creation of brand identityâ⬠is also a bad idea. A good middle ground is to refer to an interesting fact related to the topic of your paper that suggests the direction in which you are going to take your argument, e.g., ââ¬Å"In 2010 Gap launched a new logo, trying to follow the trend and look more modern. It lasted for two days before they had to revert to the old one following a massive public backlashâ⬠. Thesis Statement Contrary to popular misunderstanding, a thesis statement doesnââ¬â¢t simply repeat the topic of your paper. It is an idea youââ¬â¢ve come to, an assertion you make after doing the research on the topic, a statement of the truth which you try to prove in your paper. It should follow a few basic rules: It must be a statement, not a question (ââ¬Å"Brands are an important part of corporate identityâ⬠, not ââ¬Å"Are brands importantâ⬠?); It should be able to serve as a very short outline of your paper. By reading the outline your reader should be able to get the point you are trying to make ââ¬â the rest of the paper is just its proof; It should be specific. Be as precise as possible and avoid words like ââ¬Å"certainâ⬠, ââ¬Å"someâ⬠etc.; It should be written in your own words. Donââ¬â¢t use quotes. Body Paragraphs The most widespread way of writing body paragraphs is as follows: Introduce a new point relevant to the overall topic; Add factual evidence in support of this point; Address potential counter-arguments and explain what may look like inconsistencies in your reasoning; Go over the point one more time in relation to your thesis; Provide a logical connection with the following paragraph. As you may see, normally you should clearly delineate paragraphs so that each deals with an individual point. It makes it easier to both write and read your paper. When writing, follow these principles: Be laconic. The fewer words you use to express an idea, the better. However, donââ¬â¢t try to cut the unnecessary words now ââ¬â you will have a chance to do it during revision. Simply keep it in mind when you arrange your thoughts; Avoid passive voice. (Write ââ¬Å"Masterson proved this point in his workâ⬠rather than ââ¬Å"This point was proved by Mastersonâ⬠); Donââ¬â¢t use emotional language. Although marketing deals with emotions, you as a specialist should maintain perfect objectivity; Donââ¬â¢t overuse quotations. Although you are supposed to support your writing with existing body of research, your job is to do your own work, not recap what other people have written. Conclusion Usually conclusion is more or less a recap of the introduction: you return to your original point, refer to the evidence youââ¬â¢ve found and discussed in the course of a paper, decide if youââ¬â¢ve managed to prove your point and point out any outstanding issues that may remain. Post-Writing Tips You Canââ¬â¢t Ignore Revision is no less important than writing; probably more so. Unfortunately, many students donââ¬â¢t understand this and get worse grades than they potentially can with proper proofreading and revision. If you want to increase the chances of success for your marketing term paper, follow these suggestions: Finish early. You have an entire term to write, so try to plan your work so that you finish it some time before the deadline (e.g., a week earlier). This will give you plenty of time to correct your mistakes and rewrite passages that are particularly bad; Let it rest. Put your paper aside for a few days before starting to revise it; Donââ¬â¢t try to correct all types of mistakes in one go. Itââ¬â¢s better to revise it several times, each time concentrating on a different type of problems; Check the paper for consistency. One of the most common mistakes marketing students make is inconsistency ââ¬â in terms, in spelling, etc. Usually it concerns abbreviations and acronyms, inconsistent use of hyphens (-), en dashes (ââ¬â), and em dashes (- ) and spellings of individual words (labor vs. labour, labelling vs. labeling); Change the appearance of your paper. Either print it or temporarily change the font or its size. This will help you notice mistakes that you could have got too used to seeing by now; Check formatting. Consult your supervisor about the format used by your college and carefully study its requirements. If going through an entire style guide is too much for you, try an online guide like Purdue Owl ââ¬â they present a shorter variant of the same. You can learn to write high-quality marketing term paper through lots and lots of practice ââ¬â but with the help of this marketing term paper writing guide, you can start out better off than most of your peers.

Bettelheim applies reasoning that the bona fide meaning behind the fairy tale, ââ¬Å"Cinderellaâ⬠is sibling rivalry.
